NOW OPEN AGAIN Kex Gill Reopens Ahead of Schedule After Landslide Disruption
The A59, a major road linking Harrogate and Skipton, has reopened earlier than anticipated after a landslide forced its closure on New Year’s Day.
The incident occurred between Hardisty Hill and the junction with Kex Gill Road, leaving motorists to navigate a lengthy diversion while work was carried out. Contractors tackled the aftermath by removing 2,000 tonnes of debris, installing new drainage systems, and stabilizing the area to prevent further issues.
Although the project was originally scheduled for completion by 29 January, North Yorkshire Council announced that the work had been completed ahead of time, allowing the road to reopen on Thursday.
This latest landslip marked the 15th closure of the A59 in the area since 2000, underscoring the critical need for the £68 million Kex Gill bypass. The long-awaited bypass, designed to provide a permanent solution to the recurring disruptions, is set to open in 2026.
The A59 serves as a crucial east-west route for commuters and freight, connecting Harrogate and Skipton while also linking key motorways: junction 31 of the M6 and junction 47 of the A1(M). Its reopening will be a welcome relief for drivers who depend on this strategic route across northern England.

A59 at Kex Gill – Closure Continues as Repairs Face Weather Delays
The A59 at Kex Gill, a vital route for commuters and businesses, is set to remain closed for an extended period following a landslip caused by heavy rain on New Year’s Day. Hopes of a swift repair have been dashed as severe winter weather, including heavy snow, has delayed the start of the essential work.
The Landslip and Initial Response
North Yorkshire Council took immediate action on January 1, closing the A59 to ensure public safety after the landslip blocked part of the carriageway. Diversion routes were swiftly implemented, and a contractor was appointed to assess the damage and outline the necessary repairs.
Councillor Keane Duncan, executive member for highways and transport, explained:
“Following the unplanned closure of the A59, due to the landslip on New Year’s Day, we have appointed a contractor who has been on-site to determine the level of work required.”
However, nature had other plans. Prolonged snowfalls and freezing temperatures created a snow drift along the affected stretch, making conditions unsafe for repair crews.
Weather Woes Delay Progress
The harsh winter weather has slowed progress significantly. Snow and icy conditions have compounded the challenges of clearing landslip debris and preparing for repair work.
Councillor Duncan added:
“Unfortunately, the recent snowfall and prolonged cold spell has affected the route and resulted in a snow drift, with snow still on the bank. This has impacted the start of works.”
Despite these setbacks, there is optimism that improving weather conditions will allow work to begin soon.
Long-Term Improvements
The council is taking a proactive approach to ensure the resilience of this critical route. The repair project will include not only the removal of landslip debris but also the installation of new drainage systems to mitigate the risk of future closures.
In the meantime, businesses affected by the closure are being supported with additional signage, including “open as usual” notices, to maintain visibility and footfall. Regular updates will be provided to keep residents and businesses informed.
A Look Ahead
While the current closure presents significant challenges, the future holds promise for a more reliable A59. Work on a realigned 2.5-mile stretch of the road, designed to be landslip-proof, is progressing well. This new section is scheduled to open in June next year, providing a long-term solution to the recurring issues in the Kex Gill area.
The council remains committed to completing the current repairs as quickly and safely as possible, with efforts focused on minimizing disruption and ensuring the safety of all road users.
Stay tuned for further updates as work progresses on this vital infrastructure project.
This closure highlights the unpredictability of winter weather and its impact on critical infrastructure, but it also showcases the resilience and forward-thinking measures being taken to ensure a better future for the A59 and its users.

Polar Blast to Bring Heavy Snow and Freezing Temperatures Across the UK including Yorkshire
The UK is bracing for a significant polar blast, with heavy snow and icy conditions set to dominate the forecast in the coming days. Up to 58cm of snow is expected to blanket parts of the country, particularly in mountainous regions, as low-pressure systems bring severe winter weather.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong outlined the unfolding situation:
“From Sunday, we will see heavy rain affecting northwestern parts of Scotland. After a brief respite, further rain and strong winds will sweep across Scotland on Monday and Tuesday as another area of low pressure approaches. This may be accompanied by heavy snowfall in the mountains, and potentially at lower elevations as well.”
Northern England and Scotland to Face Arctic Conditions
Northern England, including areas like Yorkshire, is gearing up for a frigid start to the New Year. Temperatures are expected to plummet well below freezing, with only a few locations remaining above zero. Yorkshire and other northern regions could experience widespread frost and icy roads, adding to travel challenges.
Scotland will see the brunt of the snow, with mountainous areas facing blizzard-like conditions and the possibility of travel disruption. Coastal areas may see snow turning to sleet or rain due to milder air moving in intermittently.
Southern England Remains Milder
In stark contrast, southern parts of England, including London and the south coast, are forecast to enjoy milder weather, with temperatures hovering around 10°C. However, the relatively warmer conditions may still bring occasional rain and gusty winds.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson added further insight:
“Later in the week, wintry showers are likely to become a prominent feature of the forecast as a cold northerly flow becomes established. This will bring a greater risk of snow showers to many parts of the UK, even at lower elevations.”
Prepare for Hazardous Conditions
Authorities are urging the public to stay informed about local weather updates, plan journeys carefully, and prepare for possible disruptions due to snow and ice. The combination of heavy snowfall and plunging temperatures could lead to hazardous driving conditions and potential power outages in affected areas.
With extreme weather on the horizon, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the polar blast.

Yellow warning of wind affecting Yorkshire & Humber
Westerly winds will be strong and gust at times. Gusts of 50-60mph are possible over high ground.
What should I do?
Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.

Nearly Nine in 10 Beds Occupied at Harrogate Trust as NHS Faces Mounting Crisis
The Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is grappling with unrelenting pressure, with newly released data shedding light on the bed shortages straining hospitals nationwide. The findings echo dire warnings from the Prime Minister that the NHS is “on its knees,” a sentiment reinforced by nurses describing “barely a spare bed” across the health service.
Harrogate’s Bed Squeeze
NHS England’s latest figures reveal that in the week leading up to December 1, Harrogate and District Trust saw an average daily occupancy of 273 beds—an 85% occupancy rate. While an improvement from last year’s staggering 93%, it still hovers at the threshold of operational efficiency, with experts warning that hospitals ideally need to keep rates below 85% to function smoothly.
A System Under Siege
Nationally, the picture is even bleaker. Last week, England’s hospitals reported a staggering 95% bed occupancy—the highest ever recorded for this time of year. Such figures leave hospitals with little flexibility to handle emergencies or seasonal illnesses, further endangering patients and overburdened staff.
Winter Looms Large
As winter approaches, the NHS faces a perfect storm of seasonal illnesses, soaring demand, and stretched capacity. Health leaders are urging immediate action, warning that without robust plans, the system risks collapse.
Harrogate Trust’s ability to manage its bed occupancy will be a critical bellwether for the broader crisis threatening the NHS. With winter pressures mounting, all eyes are on how the Trust—and the health service—will cope.

Stay Alert: Christmas Countdown Scams to Watch Out For
As the countdown to Christmas gathers pace, we’re urging everyone to be vigilant against festive season scams. With shoppers on the hunt for deals and bargains, it’s vital to take a few simple steps to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
Scammers use tactics such as fake websites, phishing texts, and bogus competitions to exploit the holiday spirit. Here are the top five scams to watch out for this Christmas season and how to protect yourself:
- Scam Delivery Texts and Emails
- Fraudsters may send messages claiming your package is delayed, asking you to click on a link to “track its status.” This link often leads to phishing sites designed to steal personal information.
- Some scams escalate by tricking victims into providing personal details or even transferring money to bogus “safe accounts.”
- What to do:
- Forward suspicious texts to 7726.
- Report scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
- Fake and Copycat Websites
- The holiday season brings a flood of emails with “deals” that redirect to look-alike websites. These fraudulent sites trick victims into downloading malware, making non-existent purchases, or sharing sensitive information.
- How to spot them:
- Double-check website addresses for spelling errors.
- Type the URL directly into your browser or verify websites using tools like Get Safe Online.
- Bogus Charities
- Scammers set up fake charities to exploit your generosity during the holidays.
- Stay safe:
- Only donate to trusted, well-known organizations.
- Verify a charity’s name and registration number on the Charity Commission’s website.
- Gift Card Scams
- Fraudsters impersonate someone you know via email, asking you to buy a gift card as a favor. They might claim to be too ill, busy, or unable to use their payment card. They then ask for the serial numbers to steal the card’s value.
- Protect yourself:
- If you receive such a request, call the person directly using a trusted number to confirm.
- Inform them that their account may be compromised.
- Fake Social Media Contests and Sellers
- Social media platforms are rife with fake giveaways, contests, and sellers offering deals that seem too good to be true. Scammers use these to “pharm” personal information from your profile.
- Tips:
- Search for the official page to verify offers.
- Be cautious about sharing or engaging with suspicious posts.
What to Do If You Fall Victim
If you lose money to fraud, contact your bank immediately. Also, report the incident to Action Fraud at 0300 123 20 40 or via Action Fraud’s website.
By staying vigilant and informed, you can keep the festive season joyful and scam-free.

Approval Granted for 43MW Solar Farm Near Harrogate Despite Flooding Concerns
A proposed 43MW solar farm between Harrogate and Ripon has received approval from North Yorkshire Council’s strategic planning committee, despite concerns from residents about potential flooding in nearby villages.
The solar farm, planned by Harmony WG Solar Limited, will span 66 hectares near Wormald Green, Bishop Monkton, and Burton Leonard. The facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power 12,000 homes annually. The project includes ground-mounted solar panels, access to the A61, internal access tracks, a substation, two power stations, pole-mounted CCTV, fencing, and landscaping.
Local Opposition
Councillor Keith Townson from Burton Leonard Parish Council voiced local concerns during the approval process. While residents generally support renewable energy, he argued that the use of agricultural land for energy projects could compromise food production.
Cllr Townson also raised alarms about flooding risks, suggesting that the design of the solar panels might increase water runoff, worsening flooding issues in an area already prone to heavy rainfall.
“Rainwater will not simply drip off the bottom panels but will stream off the total length of these rows of solar units,” he explained, noting that flooding incidents in Burton Leonard have risen sharply—from once or twice a year in the 1970s to four or five major floods annually today.
Developer’s Reassurance
Frances Nicholson, Development Director at Harmony Energy, addressed these concerns, reassuring the committee that the project would not exacerbate local flood risks. She stated that the plan had been thoroughly reviewed and approved by the lead local flood authority.
Nicholson also highlighted several key benefits of the project, including:
- Supplying renewable energy to 12,000 homes annually.
- Contributing £40 million to the supply chain, creating skilled jobs and generating tax revenue for the UK economy.
- Achieving a 204% biodiversity net gain, enhancing local ecosystems.
“This scheme will also play a crucial role in securing a homegrown energy supply,” Nicholson added.
A Balancing Act
While the solar farm promises to advance renewable energy goals and deliver ecological benefits, its approval underscores the complex balance between mitigating climate change, preserving farmland for food production, and managing local environmental concerns such as flooding.

Harrogate Spring Water Faces Backlash for Plan to Destroy Woodland Planted by Schoolchildren
Conservation groups and local residents rally to save trees planted as a community legacy.
Harrogate Spring Water, owned by multinational corporation Danone, is facing mounting criticism over plans to clear a woodland planted by local schoolchildren almost two decades ago. The woodland, located in North Yorkshire, would be cut down to make way for the expansion of the company’s bottling plant.
The trees were planted as part of a community project led by the Rotary Club of Harrogate, which involved two primary schools and local volunteers. The initiative, designed to teach children about the importance of trees and environmental preservation, resulted in 450 saplings being planted—a legacy that has grown into a vibrant woodland.
“They taught us that trees produce oxygen, protect wildlife, and make the planet healthier. Cutting down these trees to produce more plastic bottles is the complete opposite of how we were taught about caring for the environment.”
For many, the woodland has become a cherished part of the local landscape. “It’s not just trees; it’s a living ecosystem and a peaceful place for people to walk, reflect, and connect with nature,
Conservation groups and community members, including those who participated in the planting project, have rallied in opposition. They argue the woodland symbolizes environmental stewardship and warn that its destruction undermines the values instilled in the children who helped create it.
Critics have also pointed to the irony of sacrificing a green space to expand production of single-use plastic bottles—products increasingly seen as harmful to the environment.
With the community united against the plans, Harrogate Spring Water faces growing pressure to find an alternative solution that honors the legacy of the woodland and the schoolchildren who helped create it.

Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) stepped up their campaign efforts this past weekend, staging multiple high-profile protests nationwide, including a poignant demonstration in Harrogate. The weekend’s activities led to six arrests as part of XR’s ongoing “Insure Our Survival” campaign, which targets insurance companies that continue underwriting new fossil fuel projects.
XR members organized a solemn “funeral procession” through the town centre, symbolizing the planet’s fate if action isn’t taken. The procession concluded outside Howden Insurance Brokers on Princes Street, where protesters displayed banners with powerful messages like “Insure Our Survival” and “Stop Flooding Our Homes.” Activists also presented a letter to the branch manager, urging immediate action from the insurance sector to curb climate risks.

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK to Compete for Harrogate Town Council Seats, Paving Way for Political Showdown
Harrogate’s aspirations for a modern and progressive town council may encounter new challenges as Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist party, Reform UK, signals its intent to enter the upcoming council elections. Advice for Businesses on Emergency Preparedness
Businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber are being offered free expert advice through a new online service designed to help them navigate a range of emergency situations. This initiative aims to ensure local enterprises can remain resilient during major events such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, and pandemics.
The newly launched artificial intelligence (AI) tool provides interactive, real-time conversations tailored to support businesses in preparing for emergencies, including floods, fires, extreme weather, power outages, and disruptions caused by cyber-attacks or global health crises.
This AI-powered chatbot, available via a dedicated website, allows businesses to assess and strengthen their preparedness through easy-to-use, two-way interactions. Initially, it is accessible to businesses across North, West, and South Yorkshire, as well as the Humber region.
Key Features of the Tool:
Interactive Conversations: Businesses can receive tailored advice on managing emergency situations in real-time.
Wide Accessibility: Members of the public can also engage through QR codes and the website to discuss emergency preparedness.
Practical Insights: The tool will help identify steps businesses can take to minimize disruption, from power cuts during storms to flooding and cyber threats.
David Skaith, Mayor of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and a local business owner, praised the initiative:
“I’m pleased to see our local resilience forums collaborating to create this app. In times of crisis, businesses play a vital role in how our communities respond. This tool will empower businesses across Yorkshire to be better prepared for emergencies, and reduce the impact on their operations and local communities.”
Reflecting on the regional responses to past crises like the Covid-19 pandemic, Skaith highlighted the resilience of Yorkshire businesses:
“Whether facing storms, supply chain issues, or a cyber-attack, businesses will find practical steps to enhance their emergency preparedness and minimize risks.”
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, emphasized the importance of this resource:
“Our businesses constantly adapt to changes in markets, technology, and regulations. But what they shouldn’t have to worry about are preventable emergencies. This new support from our resilience forums will give businesses the peace of mind they need to focus on their growth and success.”
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, echoed these sentiments, stating:
“I’m proud to support the Yorkshire Ready Together project, which builds on the lessons learned from recent floods and the Covid-19 pandemic. This tool is a crucial step in strengthening local businesses’ ability to respond swiftly and effectively when emergencies occur.”
Supporting Partners:
The project is backed by Yorkshire’s Local Resilience Forums (LRFs), which are multi-agency partnerships involving local authorities, emergency services, utilities, healthcare providers, and government agencies. These forums are tasked with planning and preparing for local incidents.
A survey conducted in October 2023 found that while 63% of respondents recognized the importance of community resilience, 78% believed that a lack of information and awareness was the biggest barrier preventing businesses and communities from becoming emergency-ready.
With this in mind, Yorkshire Ready Together aims to close the information gap, ensuring businesses have the tools and resources they need to protect their operations and serve their communities in times of crisis.
