Extinction Rebellion Harrogate Ramps Up Protests Amid Crucial Year for Climate Action

Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) stepped up their campaign efforts this past weekend, staging multiple high-profile protests nationwide, including a poignant demonstration in Harrogate. The weekend’s activities led to six arrests as part of XR’s ongoing “Insure Our Survival” campaign, which targets insurance companies that continue underwriting new fossil fuel projects.

XR members organized a solemn “funeral procession” through the town centre, symbolizing the planet’s fate if action isn’t taken. The procession concluded outside Howden Insurance Brokers on Princes Street, where protesters displayed banners with powerful messages like “Insure Our Survival” and “Stop Flooding Our Homes.” Activists also presented a letter to the branch manager, urging immediate action from the insurance sector to curb climate risks.

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK to Compete for Harrogate Town Council Seats, Paving Way for Political Showdown

Harrogate’s aspirations for a modern and progressive town council may encounter new challenges as Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist party, Reform UK, signals its intent to enter the upcoming council elections. Although voting remains eight months away, and North Yorkshire Council has not yet finalized the scope of authority for the soon-to-be-formed Harrogate Town Council, Reform UK has declared its eagerness to join the 19-seat race.

This week, Reform UK’s Harrogate and Knaresborough branch hosted a well-attended meeting, marking an unofficial campaign launch for the 2025 elections. The event attracted a varied audience, eager to understand more about the emerging responsibilities of the town council. With increasing public interest in the May elections, Harrogate may witness a high-stakes political showdown, as different visions for the town’s governance take centre stage in the months ahead.

The Mayor has a duty to consult with communities, businesses, stakeholders and staff to develop plans which set out the strategic direction and priorities for North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and victims’ services across York and North Yorkshire.

Mayor David Skaith has delegated the consultation process and setting of the priorities to Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime.

To help in this work to make York and North Yorkshire safer for everyone who lives here, works here and visits us, they want to hear your views on your priorities for your local police and fire services.

The six week public consultation runs from Monday 7 October until Monday 18 November 2024.

Communities are at the heart of our ambitions for York and North Yorkshire, and we are committed to working together to overcome challenges, developing early prevention strategies to create a safer place for everyone who lives, works, and visits here. To do this we need to make sure our police and fire priorities reflect your needs that is why it is so important that as many people as possible take part in this consultation.”

Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime said:

“It is really important to the Mayor and I that our local police, fire and crime plans reflect local needs and priorities and the views of local residents, businesses and communities.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible, across all communities in York and North Yorkshire. Please take a few moments and have your say.”

Residents or community groups can complete the online survey at www.YourPoliceAndFire.com.

Advice for Businesses on Emergency Preparedness

Businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber are being offered free expert advice through a new online service designed to help them navigate a range of emergency situations. This initiative aims to ensure local enterprises can remain resilient during major events such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, and pandemics.

The newly launched artificial intelligence (AI) tool provides interactive, real-time conversations tailored to support businesses in preparing for emergencies, including floods, fires, extreme weather, power outages, and disruptions caused by cyber-attacks or global health crises.

This AI-powered chatbot, available via a dedicated website, allows businesses to assess and strengthen their preparedness through easy-to-use, two-way interactions. Initially, it is accessible to businesses across North, West, and South Yorkshire, as well as the Humber region.

Key Features of the Tool:

Interactive Conversations: Businesses can receive tailored advice on managing emergency situations in real-time.

Wide Accessibility: Members of the public can also engage through QR codes and the website to discuss emergency preparedness.

Practical Insights: The tool will help identify steps businesses can take to minimize disruption, from power cuts during storms to flooding and cyber threats.

David Skaith, Mayor of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and a local business owner, praised the initiative:

“I’m pleased to see our local resilience forums collaborating to create this app. In times of crisis, businesses play a vital role in how our communities respond. This tool will empower businesses across Yorkshire to be better prepared for emergencies, and reduce the impact on their operations and local communities.”

Reflecting on the regional responses to past crises like the Covid-19 pandemic, Skaith highlighted the resilience of Yorkshire businesses:

“Whether facing storms, supply chain issues, or a cyber-attack, businesses will find practical steps to enhance their emergency preparedness and minimize risks.”

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, emphasized the importance of this resource:

“Our businesses constantly adapt to changes in markets, technology, and regulations. But what they shouldn’t have to worry about are preventable emergencies. This new support from our resilience forums will give businesses the peace of mind they need to focus on their growth and success.”

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, echoed these sentiments, stating:

“I’m proud to support the Yorkshire Ready Together project, which builds on the lessons learned from recent floods and the Covid-19 pandemic. This tool is a crucial step in strengthening local businesses’ ability to respond swiftly and effectively when emergencies occur.”

Supporting Partners:

The project is backed by Yorkshire’s Local Resilience Forums (LRFs), which are multi-agency partnerships involving local authorities, emergency services, utilities, healthcare providers, and government agencies. These forums are tasked with planning and preparing for local incidents.

A survey conducted in October 2023 found that while 63% of respondents recognized the importance of community resilience, 78% believed that a lack of information and awareness was the biggest barrier preventing businesses and communities from becoming emergency-ready.

With this in mind, Yorkshire Ready Together aims to close the information gap, ensuring businesses have the tools and resources they need to protect their operations and serve their communities in times of crisis.

For more information and to join the conversation on emergency preparedness, visit Yorkshire Ready Together at https://yorkshirereadytogether.co.uk/

Breaking Local News from Masham

Masham Sheep Fair will take place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of September 2024

The popular Masham Sheep Fair commemorates these times, raising much money for charity, and filling the town with sheepy fun and entertainment. Masham is a wonderful market town which is worth visiting at any time of year, as well as during the Sheep Fair! It’s also a great base for exploring the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

Events include an action packed programme on  both Saturday and Sunday, with sheep showing, Sheep Racing, Craft Market, Bishop Blaize Procession, Fleece Stalls, Sheepdog Demonstrations, Hand Bell Ringers, Morris Dancers, Art Exhibition and Tours of Theakstons & Black Sheep Breweries, as well as a small Children’s Fair. The theme for the flower display in St. Mary’s Church will be “A Harvest of Fruit”.

Over 30 years of the sheep fair

Susan Cunliffe-Lister and a band of willing volunteers started the Sheep Fair 30 years ago. It was intended as a one-off to raise money for farmers in Africa – Sheep Aid. We raised £7,950 and it was decided to make It an annual event, raising money for local charities. Since then we have raised £158,700 for Yorkshire charities. We kept going through the two Foot & Mouth affected years with ‘scarecrow shepherds and sheep’. We used to have a sale of rare breeds on the Sunday but the biosecurity after the foot & mouth outbreak made this too difficult. This led to new activities such as the very popular sheep racing, sheepdog display with the ducks and the Sheep Show, sponsored by Black Sheep Brewery.

Local photographer Guy Carpenter took these images of the 2016 show and we think he’s really captured the essence of this amazing event.

A big Thank you!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to the 2023 Sheep Fair. Your visit enabled us to make donations to all these local organisations:

£11,581 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

£500 Masham Young Farmers (who did a brilliant job helping to set up/clear up)

£400 to Masham Church of England Primary School

£200 Masham Children’s Sports

£200 Masham Sports Association + £100 for their development fund

One charged and awaiting sentencing following a high-speed pursuit in Ripon

In the early hours of yesterday morning, officers from our Roads Policing team, Response team, and Investigation Hub successfully apprehended a suspect following a nearly 30-minute police pursuit that spanned multiple areas.

The incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle in Ripon at around 3.30am yesterday (Sunday 1 September) after driving erratically and going through red lights, only for the driver to flee at high speed.

Recognising the danger posed to our communities, officers immediately initiated a pursuit, coordinating closely with colleagues from across the force.

The pursuit covered significant ground, but thanks to the swift response of all involved, and successful deployment of two stingers, the vehicle was brought to a safe stop.

A 41-year-old man from Middlesborough was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple driving offences.

He appeared in court today and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced later this month.

This operation highlights the professionalism of our officers and the vital role that teamwork plays in maintaining public safety.

We hope this sends a clear message to those intent on carrying our criminality in our county that we will take decisive action to stop them in their tracks.

And our communities can rest assured knowing that those who endanger others will be held accountable.

Reminder for North Yorkshire Residents to Confirm Voter Registration

Residents across North Yorkshire are being urged to ensure they are registered to vote at their current address, or they risk missing the opportunity to have a say on decisions affecting their community.

The annual electoral canvass is now in progress, helping to keep the electoral register updated. This process identifies individuals at risk of losing their voting rights and encourages them to register before the deadline.

Residents should have received an email or letter with detailed instructions on how to verify and confirm their information. Those who have received an email are advised to respond promptly to avoid receiving additional reminder notices.

Richard Flinton, Electoral Registration Officer, and the council’s Chief Executive, explained:

“Each year, our elections office is legally required to confirm whether the details we hold on the electoral register for every household are correct and update them if needed. This is the purpose of the annual canvass.

“We encourage residents to check their emails or post for important updates. To avoid losing your voice in future elections, simply follow the instructions provided.

“In some instances, no response is necessary if we already have accurate details, but the mailing will confirm if any action is required from you.

“If you are not yet registered, your name won’t appear on the forms. The easiest way to register is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”

A revised electoral register will be published on 1 December following the canvass.

For additional information, visit the Electoral Commission website. Residents with questions about their registration can contact the electoral services team by emailing elections@northyorks.gov.uk or calling 0300 131 2 131.

We really enjoyed it’ – Praise as successful Harrogate Lego Trail drives increased footfall and spend into town centre

Businesses in Harrogate have said this year’s Lego Trail from the BID had an important impact on driving footfall and spend into the town, with models visited almost 27,000 times.

Data shows that 26,900 visits were made to the designated QR code pages and the BID website during the Lego Trail, which is more than double the last time the trail was held in 2022. But, as the Lego Trail was mainly completed by families and groups of two or more, the figure of those that took part is likely to be closer to the 50,000 mark.

Feedback from BID Members has been highly positive and encouraging, with one stating: “It definitely increased our footfall and our income, so thank you for making such a difference to our work!”

Meanwhile, another business owner said that the Lego trail has been “by far the most beneficial activity that the BID has done to help retail footfall.”

“This has been the most popular so far and I think that people would be disappointed if it went to every other year. It has brought so much positive feedback around town and definitely brought new customers to our shop,” they added.

It also seems that the trail helped people to discover new areas and businesses in Harrogate, with one person stating: “We discovered some new places such as Artizan Cafe by doing the trail. Our kids loved it, it’s great to have something so accessible.”

Matthew Chapman, Harrogate BID Manager, said the team are incredibly pleased to have brought another hugely successful Lego Trail to the town centre.

Matthew said: “As the BID, we host a series of footfall and spend increasing campaigns and events across the year – and the Lego Trail has done just that!

“We’re so pleased it has brought such a positive feel to our town and we really appreciate all of the lovely feedback we’ve had so far.

“The Lego Trail is always a massively popular event in our calendar – and it seems this year definitely didn’t disappoint!”

Harrogate BID has plenty of events upcoming over the rest of the year, from celebrations at the Music Weekender, spooky fun in a new Halloween trail and festive Christmas installations.

The team are also well underway with planning events, campaigns and services for 2025, with further details to be announced over the coming months.

Planned Upgrades During Sutton Bank Maintenance to Benefit Local Visitor Centre

The upcoming annual maintenance on the A170, a crucial east-west route known for its challenging steep ascent at Sutton Bank, will introduce several enhancements this year, bringing added benefits to the nearby popular visitor centre.

The week-long project, commencing on Sunday, 8th September, aims to maintain the structural integrity of the route between Helmsley and Thirsk, while also addressing new features that will enhance both safety and visitor experience.

Key works by the highways team will include slope inspections to mitigate rockfall risks, checking boreholes to prevent landslips, and clearing overhanging vegetation. Repairs will also be made to the restraint barriers at one of the hairpin bends following a recent incident, and trenches will be dug across the road to install electrical wiring for three new vehicle-activated signs, improving overall road safety.

Cllr Keane Duncan, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, emphasized the importance of minimizing the closure time for such a key route. “The A170 is vital for residents, commuters, and visitors alike. The annual maintenance at Sutton Bank allows us to package critical repairs into a single closure, preventing unexpected and disruptive shutdowns later in the year.”

This year’s maintenance plan includes routine tasks such as jetting drains, emptying gullies, improving road lining, replacing granite setts, installing new cat’s eyes, trimming vegetation, and replenishing grit bins. While acknowledging the inconvenience of the necessary road diversion, Cllr Duncan asked for public understanding: “We appreciate the disruption but kindly request cooperation and patience during this essential work.”

In a collaborative effort, North Yorkshire Council is working closely with the Sutton Bank National Park Centre, which welcomes around 130,000 visitors annually. As part of the maintenance scheme, the car park to the west of the centre will be used to store equipment, and lining improvements will be made to the car park as part of the overall project.

Chris Pye, Manager of the Sutton Bank National Park Centre, highlighted the significance of the A170 to the centre’s visitors. “More than half of our visitors likely navigate the steep incline of Sutton Bank to reach us. While the climb presents a challenge, the stunning views from the top are the primary reason people visit. We’re grateful to have worked with North Yorkshire Council for many years to ensure the road remains in excellent condition. Any unexpected closures have a significant impact on visitor numbers and the overall experience.”

In recognition of the partnership, the council’s decision to reline one of the centre’s car parks was met with gratitude. “This generous gesture will further enhance the first impression when visitors arrive,” Pye added, emphasizing the importance of maintaining both road safety and the visitor experience.

These improvements, along with the strategic planning of the maintenance, ensure that both the road and visitor services remain in optimal condition, benefiting all who travel through or visit the Sutton Bank area.

Harrogate Town AFC

After their weekend victory at Colchester, Town now shift focus to the Carabao Cup, where they will face Championship side Preston North End this coming Tuesday. The match is a reward for their hard-fought 2-1 win over League One outfit Lincoln City in round one.

Despite a challenging start to their season, Preston head into the tie fresh from a win over fellow Championship club Sunderland in round one of the competitions.

Opponent Overview

The 2024/25 season marks Preston’s tenth consecutive year in the Championship. They finished last season in tenth place, just seven points shy of the playoff spots. While their league campaign began with two losses, Preston secured a 1-0 victory against Luton Town in Paul Heckingbottom’s debut as manager, replacing Ryan Lowe after the opening match.

Carabao Cup History

Town will aim to surpass last season’s run, where they reached the second round, as they did in 2020/21. Preston, meanwhile, will seek to improve on last season’s early exit, though they previously reached round four in both 2020/21 and 2021/22.

The Manager

Paul Heckingbottom now leads Preston North End after replacing Ryan Lowe. Heckingbottom brings experience from managing Barnsley, Leeds United, and most recently Sheffield United. As a player, he made over 400 appearances for clubs like Darlington, Barnsley, and Bradford City. Notably, he ended his playing career with Town, making 21 appearances in the 2011/12 season.

Key Players to Watch

Will Keane, last season’s top scorer for Preston, secured their win over Luton at the weekend and will be a key threat in attack.

Emil Riis, a Danish international, is expected to partner Keane up front.

Stefan Thordarson, who joined from Danish side Silkeborg, has quickly settled into Preston’s squad.

Kaine Kesler-Heyden, on loan from Aston Villa, adds youthful energy.

Veteran Robbie Brady brings invaluable experience from his time with Norwich, Hull, and Burnley.

A Brief History of Preston North End

As one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888, Preston has a rich history. Their Deepdale stadium is the oldest continuously used football ground by a league club. In their debut season, Preston became the first team to win both the League Championship and FA Cup, achieving the first-ever domestic double. They won the league again the following season and lifted the FA Cup once more in 1938.

Fight to Save Knaresborough Market

Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has firmly opposed North Yorkshire Council’s controversial proposal that would require market traders to finance and set up their own stalls. The new changes, set to be implemented as early as November 2024, have sparked significant concern among local residents and business owners who fear it could drastically reduce the number of traders and jeopardize the market’s historic presence in the town.

The Knaresborough Market, a cornerstone of the community for centuries, faces uncertainty under the council’s plan. Gordon has called for the market’s management to be transferred to Knaresborough Town Council, emphasizing the need for more local control:

“The market should be managed locally by Knaresborough Town Council, as has been previously discussed. We were promised devolution, but once again North Yorkshire Council is delaying to the detriment of local people and businesses.”

Gordon visited the market on August 21st as part of his ‘Summer Tour’ of the constituency, where he spoke directly with residents and traders who voiced their concerns about the proposed changes. Many fear the requirement for traders to set up their own stalls could disproportionately affect elderly and disabled stallholders, raising potential discrimination concerns.

“Everyone I spoke to made it clear just how important this market is to them,” Gordon stated.

The physical demands of stall setup could create significant barriers for older and less physically able traders, which some argue could breach discrimination laws. These concerns have led to a petition urging the council to rethink its strategy, with over 600 signatures already collected.

Gordon underscored the importance of the market to Knaresborough’s identity and local economy, stating:

“Knaresborough Town Council exists to support local issues like this. The market is vital to the town’s character, and defunding it would harm not only businesses but also the elderly and disabled traders who rely on the current system.”

He also took aim at the North Yorkshire Council’s decision-making process, highlighting the disconnect between Knaresborough and the council’s headquarters in Northallerton:

“North Yorkshire Council, based miles away in Northallerton, seems out of touch with Knaresborough’s needs. They should be working to strengthen our communities, not implementing changes that threaten them. This plan must be scrapped.”

Gordon concluded by confirming he would meet with North Yorkshire Council’s CEO in the coming week, with saving Knaresborough Market a top priority on the agenda.

The future of the market remains uncertain, but local support to preserve this beloved institution continues to grow.
