A59 at Kex Gill is expected to be closed for several weeks
A59 at Kex Gill Closed Indefinitely After Landslip on New Year’s Day
The A59 at Kex Gill, a vital route connecting Skipton and Harrogate, is expected to remain closed for several weeks following a dramatic landslip in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The collapse occurred after heavy and sustained rainfall caused a section of the road to fall away into the adjacent carriageway.
The closure was implemented without warning, and North Yorkshire Council has since announced plans to begin clearing the site and stabilising the affected bank on Monday, January 6. However, the timeline for reopening the road remains uncertain and is heavily dependent on weather conditions.
Cllr Keane Duncan, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, stated:
“The A59 at Kex Gill has a well-documented history of landslips, and unfortunately, 2025 has begun with yet another incident. The severe weather and significant rainfall in the early hours of New Year’s Day have caused substantial damage.
“Our preliminary assessment indicates extensive repairs are required to the southern bank adjacent to the road. The area contains a large amount of loose material, which poses a further risk of collapse, particularly with additional poor weather expected in the coming days.
“We plan to mobilize crews on-site from Monday to clear the debris and stabilize the bank. While this process may take a few weeks, we are hopeful that favorable conditions could allow for an earlier reopening.”
Impact on Road Users
Drivers are urged to use the official diversion route, which follows the A658, A660, and A65. Although the council acknowledges the disruption to travel, safety remains the priority.
Cllr Duncan added:
“We recognize the inconvenience this closure causes and want to assure residents and road users that we are working tirelessly to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible. Further updates will be provided next week as progress is made.”
Unrelated to Realignment Project
Cllr Duncan clarified that this incident is unrelated to the ongoing A59 realignment project, which aims to permanently mitigate issues of this nature. He noted:
“The realignment project is progressing well and is specifically designed to prevent unplanned and disruptive closures like this one in the future.”

A59 Closed Following Landslip After Heavy Rain
North Yorkshire Council announced the closure of the A59 on January 1st due to a landslip triggered by heavy overnight rain. The road, a critical transport artery connecting Harrogate and Skipton, has been closed in both directions as a safety precaution.
The A59 has long been prone to landslips, prompting a £68.9 million realignment project aimed at resolving this persistent issue. These incidents have caused significant inconvenience to motorists, resulting in extensive detours and have imposed considerable financial burdens on the council.
The New Year’s Day closure of the A59 was among several road disruptions reported across North Yorkshire, as torrential rain and widespread flooding wreaked havoc throughout the region. North Yorkshire Council is actively monitoring the situation and has assured residents and commuters that regular updates will be provided.
