Harrogate District Swimming Club

Harrogate District Swimming Club (HDSC) is a voluntary association that exists to promote the enjoyment of competitive swimming. HDSC was the first Club in Yorkshire to achieve nationally recognised accreditation under the Swim England SwimMark scheme (previously ASA Swim 21).

Our long term vision is to provide a comprehensive programme covering competitive swimming, whilst also providing for those who just want to train for fitness, enjoyment or to compete in other disciplines, incorporating Masters and Disability swimming. We work closely with our local provider, Brimhams Active, to make this vision a reality.

How We Run

HDSC is run by a Committee under the Laws of Swim England to which it is affiliated through the Yorkshire  SA and Swim England North Eastern Region. Members have the opportunity to swim for individual honours through the Club, County and Regional Championships run by the above bodies. HDSC has a reputation for running Swim meets at the Hydro which are to a very high standard; please see the Harrogate Meets section of the web site for details.

Welcome to the Harrogate School of Swimming, founded and managed by Louise Aikman. She teaches alongside a fantastic, enthusiastic group of fully qualified Swim England instructors.

We offer an outstanding development scheme for children aged 3 years old and upwards, following the Swim England Amateur Learn to Swim Framework. This plan teaches the fundamentals of swimming using the most innovative techniques, in a fun and exciting environment. The use of toys and games are a big part of our beginner classes. We aim to create a happy and safe environment concentrating initially on water confidence, and building on the necessary skills to develop stroke technique, through to encouraging stamina and advanced strokes.

Swimmers will be continually assessed during their lessons and formal assessments are undertaken every term, with badges awarded for successfully completing all skills required for each award. There is a strict criteria for gaining each of the awards; therefore some children may not achieve awards every term.

Group sizes are small (up to 4) so that each child receives the attention they deserve and this enables them to progress at their own pace. Tuition is “hands on” with the extra security of having their teacher in the water with them at the early stages of swimming.

Lessons take place every week during term times and are 30 minutes in duration. In addition intensive week swimming courses take place during the Easter & Summer holidays.

Private lessons are available for all ages and abilities by request – we provide from beginners to advanced competitive swim
