Spooky Halloween Trail Launches in Ripon for October Half Term ends November

Ripon has unveiled a family-friendly Halloween Trail just in time for the October half-term, running until November 3rd! This fun and spooky activity invites families and visitors to explore the heart of Ripon, searching for festively decorated pumpkins displayed in shop windows. Pick up a trail map from participating local businesses, which will guide you through each stop to spot all the pumpkins.

Families who successfully find all the pumpkins can enter a prize draw for a chance to win a cash prize! Organized by the Ripon BID team, this event aims to welcome families and friends into the city center to celebrate Halloween together.

Where to Pick Up Your Trail Map: Maps are available at the following locations:

  • Ripon Library
  • The Little Ripon Bookshop
  • Hallicustom
  • Ripon BID Office
  • Specsavers

How to Join the Fun:

  1. Grab a trail sheet from any of the locations listed.
  2. Search for pumpkins along the trail and mark their numbers on your sheet.
  3. Return your completed sheet to Ripon BID for a chance at the prize—and don’t forget to let them know which pumpkin was your favorite!

Important Clarification about Market Square Resurfacing Works
Traffic Restrictions:
From 28th October to 24th November inclusive the following roads ONLY will be restricted to traffic: Market Place East, Kirkgate down to Duck Hill junction with B6265 Water Skellgate, Kirkgate to the junction with Minster Road and Market Place South.  ALL other roads will be open to traffic.
Free first ½ hour car parking in Market Square car park:
After strong lobbying from Ripon BID and a contribution of £1,500 from Cllr Andrew Williams’ locality budget, North Yorkshire Council have confirmed that they will offer the first ½ hour car parking in Market Square car park for free from 1st to 30th November.  Ripon BID will then potentially subsidise the cost of this after the removal of the road closure and for the remainder of the festive period from 1st December to 31st December.
Signage:
After discussions with North Yorkshire Highways, Ripon BID can confirm that the large yellow advance warning signs should be replaced with smaller road closure and diversion signs by Monday 28th October.  Ripon BID has also asked North Yorkshire highways department to alter the information on the road closure map on their website to show just the current restrictions and be clear that Market Place West will remain open for this first phase of the works.  They have advised that the public should refer to: https://uk.one.network/communicate/causeway-onenetwork-map North Yorkshire Council have also informed us that they will also erect “Business open as usual” signs.
Car Park Access:
During the works access to ALL car parks in Ripon will be maintained.  There will be some diversion needed to access the Market Square car park from the North and this is detailed below.  Access to the Market Square car park from High Skellgate will be via Market Place West.
Access to The Arcade, Cathedral and St Marygate car parks will be via Moss Arcade, via Allhallowgate/Victoria Grove or via St Marygate as normal.

The Ripon Together Green Fair 2024 will be held on Saturday, 5th October, from 10 am to 3 pm at Allhallowgate Methodist Church and Church Hall. This exciting event will feature around 25 stalls and stands from various groups and organisations passionate about the environment.

Highlights of the day include:

  • Outdoor exhibit with a 36 Bus display and discussions on integrated public transport and sustainable travel.
  • Children’s activities and an art competition to encourage family participation.
  • Expert presentations in the main church covering key topics such as:
    • Heat pump technology
    • Renewable energy
    • Home retrofitting for energy efficiency
    • Waste management and recycling
    • Local green initiatives
    • Sustainable farming
    • Regenerative design and local conservation efforts

The fair is also an opportunity for local businesses to learn about reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint. During the last hour of presentations, businesses can attend a session focused on:

  • Energy use optimization
  • Cost savings
  • Recycling practices
  • Attracting eco-conscious consumers

One of the key case studies to be presented will be the energy assessment of Londis, Ananya Store on Elm Road, carried out by Excel Utilities. The assessment, including cost-saving recommendations, will be shared by the store owner Darshan Sidpura, who has been striving to reduce the store’s £3000+ monthly energy bill. Energy Oasis, another expert, will provide further insights for landlords, tenants, and commercial property owners.

This is a great opportunity to learn how to contribute to a greener future, with local businesses like Ripon Race Company Ltd. supporting the event. As Jonathan Mullin from the company stated, “Ripon Green Fair is a great initiative, bringing people and businesses together to look at ways in which we can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.”

BIDs provide additional or improved services over and above those provided by the Council and give local businesses the opportunity to influence the long-term economic development of the place where they operate. This could include extra safety, cleaning and environmental measures as well as events, place shaping, business support and enhanced marketing and promotion for the businesses and the area.

How is it funded?

BIDs are funded by a mandatory levy on all eligible businesses after a successful ballot. The levy is based on rateable value and is payable in addition to business rates. All businesses in the area (subject to the BID levy rules) must pay the levy for the period the BID is in existence. There is also a voluntary membership scheme.

National Accreditation from The BID Foundation

The BID Foundation’s Industry Standards was awarded to Ripon BID in recognition of its standards of transparency and responsible governance, following an independent review process.
