Music in Harrogate

Music in Harrogate. Music can be very inconceivable and hard to describe thanks to its almost magical nature. How you to describe music using the 10 most common musical parameters: Rhythm, tempo, harmony, melody, instrumentation, dynamic, texture, genre, form, and temperature?

The Harrogate Band

About us

The Harrogate Band was formed in April 1970 from a nucleus of former Harrogate Granby High School Concert Band pupils who wanted to continue their playing after leaving the school. It was the first brass band in Harrogate since the original Harrogate Silver Prize Band folded in 1956. The Band’s first conductor, Neil Richmond, led it to success at its first contest in November 1970 at York – the first of many contest successes over the last 30 years. See Harrogate Band’s Early History for more information about the early years.By September 1971 there was a full Band of over 25 players, and it had started to purchase its own instruments. Concerts that first year included the first of a regular series of concerts in the Valley Gardens in Harrogate. Neil Richmond was followed as musical director by John Higginson, Peter Littlewood, Peter Wells, David Lancaster, Roy Waite and Craig Ratcliffe. Each stamped his character on the band and continued its musical development in his own manner. Under their tutelage the band has risen up the sections to the Championship Section in the North of England. It currently competes in the 1st Section nationally. A strong administration underpins the band’s musical endeavours – an essential adjunct for any aspiring or successful organisation.See also: Historical information about earlier bands in Harrogate
The Band has, over the years, established itself as the premier brass band in the local area. It performs up to 30 concert engagements each year and enters up to 5 contests. The Band has been involved in a wide range of engagements over the years, including joint concerts with choirs, commercial functions, garden parties, fetes, weddings, church services, carol concerts and carol playing in the town, small groups of players, fanfare trumpets, sporting events, agricultural shows, radio broadcasts, television programmes, films, marches and processions, charity concerts, massed band concerts and many others! It currently has over 1,400 sets of music in its library.

Many players have passed through the Band since 1970. The players are all amateur musicians, as are the great majority of all British brass band members. Their dedication to the band and music is as firm as work, family and other commitments allow – which enables the band to develop its team playing strength and quality. Details of players past and present can be seen at The Band.

The Band has undertaken seven overseas concert tours. It has travelled to Bergen in Norway as the guests of Sandvikens Ungdomskorps in 1977 and 1984, hosting their trip to Harrogate in 1975. It has also been to Bad Hersfeld in Germany as the guests of the Stadt Musikverein Band (SMV) in 1981, 1986 and 1990, and hosted SMV’s trips to Harrogate in 1982, 1987 and 1993. Then followed a tour to Prague in the Czech Republic in 1996. It also hosted a visit of the Gerwens Muziekkorps (GMK) Band, from Nuenen in The Netherlands, in October 1998 and visited GMK in Holland in May/June 2000. A tour to the Rhineland in Germany in 2003 was followed by a concert tour in Belgium and Holland in 2007. Our latest overseas tour was to Luchon in the Pyrenees in 2014 for their Flower Festival.

The Band loves contesting and is successful in many of the contests it enters. It qualified for and competed in the National Brass Band Championship Finals three years running 2002, 2001, 2000, and also achieved that honour in 1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 2011 and 2013. The Band became North of England Region Champions (1st Section) in 2001, 2011, 2013 and 2018. Recent contest results can be found here.

The Band is a self-supporting organisation – its funds come from engagement fees, fund-raising activities and membership subscription.

The band has a formal Constitution and set of Rules, both of which are available for reference here.

The Band is a member of Brass Bands England.

We’re seriously entertaining and are a popular choice for performing at concerts and all sorts of great events. As well as putting on fantastic concerts we currently compete in the First Section, so our standard of playing is consistently high and we have a reputation for innovation and performing exciting contemporary music. Why not come and see us perform? You’ll love what we do and we’d love to see you.

Jonny Ross Music Ltd – https://www.jonnyrossmusic.com/

A family-run business founded by musicians.

I (Jonny Ross) founded the company in 2011 as a budding singer and guitarist. Initially, it started as just The Jonny Ross Band, and now we manage over 40 musicians. The musicians we work with are all friends of the business and professionals we have worked with over the years. Our sole focus is to help customers find the perfect entertainment and help them to have the night of their lives. Over the last 11 years, we have provided entertainment to over 3000 events in 15 different countries. We are rated five stars on Trustpilot, Google, and Facebook and have a proven track record for success. All the DJs and Musicians who work for us are friends of the business and have been handpicked to provide the best possible service.

I am joined in the team by Kyle Clingo (DJ), Ellie Ross (Ex DJ), and Katie Heap (lead singer of Northern House Band). As a small team of musicians who have collectively performed at over 1000 weddings, we are experts in our field. We will speak with you running up to the event and ensure the event is personally planned to reflect your dreams and aspirations.

YORKSHIRE DJ BEATS – https://ydjb.co.uk/

My name is Chris and I’ve been DJ’ing for just over 10 years now. Before I was a DJ I was an Events Manager at a local venue in Harrogate managing corporate hospitality events but mainly weddings.

I always liked to do the wedding celebrations as I found that the small things make a massive difference. Being an experienced toast master I have no problem at all taking charge of events, parties and weddings, something I really enjoy. I have my own little ways of making the bride and groom’s special day extra special and this is what makes my job so enjoyable.

Skipping for a few years I am now one of Harrogate’s and North Yorkshire’s leading DJ for parties and weddings and to be truthfully honest I do this because I love it, not because of the late nights and hours spent planning the perfect playlist for the bride and groom, but the event itself.

To see the happy faces of all the party-goers, the bride and groom and their families and friends is amazing and its all down to when people come up to me at the end of the night and say what a fantastic time they have had. But later when I receive an email or letter from the client telling me what a great time everybody is had, this is what makes everything worthwhile and why I enjoy it so much. For me pride is everything, taking pride in appearance, taking pride in the way the room looks and even the fine details from the way the cake is lit so the photographer can get the perfect photograph and from the way I announce the first dance and make the bride and groom feel extra special. For me the small details make the bigger picture much brighter and much more special.
