The landscape of the mortgage industry in the United Kingdom has a rich history. Traditionally, it was the building societies that held sway, with the very first one opening its doors in Birmingham back in 1775. However, a significant transformation has occurred since the 1970s. The dominance of building societies in the new mortgage loans market has substantially dwindled. In a span of just a decade, from 1977 to 1987, their market share plummeted from an overwhelming 96% to 66%. In contrast, banks and other financial institutions saw their share rise from a mere 3% to a substantial 36%.

Today, the mortgage industry in the UK is a diverse landscape, featuring major players such as building societies, banks, specialized mortgage corporations, insurance companies, and pension funds. Notably, in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the UK mutual sector played a pivotal role, providing approximately 80% of net lending to the housing market during the four years that followed.

The industry has evolved to include over 200 significant financial organizations that offer mortgage loans to prospective homebuyers in Britain. Among these, Lloyds Bank and the Nationwide Building Society stand out with the largest market share, shaping the financial landscape of home financing in the UK.
