Our care doesn’t stop just because it’s Christmas
Our specialist medical team works throughout the festive period, delivering free, medical care, day and night 24/7, to children with life-shortening conditions.
We don’t stop or reduce our services at Christmas – we are here 365 days a year.
So, if a child becomes seriously unwell, needs pain management, the family need a break or a child is coming to the end of their life at Christmas, we are here.

“Families have someone at the end of the phone, they have someone who in an emergency can do a home visit, and there is a place they can come if sadly their child is at the end of their life, or struggling with difficult symptoms. They can get that care even though it’s Christmas.”
Dr Michelle Hills
Consultant and Chief Medical Officer
“We know we would still have a Christmas if Alayna was to become unwell, because of Martin House. It’s somewhere we can call home, a place where you can still make memories in situations you wouldn’t think possible, even at the hardest times.”
Sophie and Jazz
Alayna’s parents
“We are so focused on making every minute as good as it can possibly be for children with short lives. Every minute matters that little bit more, if you have a child with a life-shortening condition.”
Vicki Greensmith
Director of Clinical Services
Creating magical Christmas memories
Providing the much needed care is vital to families, but so is creating precious memories and moments. Memories that they would be unable to make without the help of Martin House.
You can make it possible for families to make magical memories, at what could be their last Christmas together.

Help us make every Christmas count
Christmas is a very important time for many of the families we support at Martin House. We don’t know how many Christmases a family will have with their child, and so, we do everything we can to create beautiful, magical moments during the festive period, that families will treasure forever.
In our vital Christmas appeal, families and staff share with you their Christmas wishes and the precious memories we have helped them make at Martin House. We wish we could add days to their life. With your help, we are determined to add life to their days.
Will you grant our wish and help us make every Christmas count?

“Every minute matters just that little bit more if your child has a life-shortening condition.”
Vicki Greensmith, Director of Clinical Services
A trip to see Santa as a family or attend a Christmas party is something many families who use Martin House wish for. But it can be impossible for those families who have a child with a life-shortening condition. Many wish they could attend a carol concert without needing the security of being close to a hospital — just in case.
Some wish their child could see this Christmas.

Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately, we can’t allow dogs on the walk for insurances purposes, we hope this doesn’t cause disappointment.
Where can I park?
There is very limited parking available near the start of the walk. We would advise if you live in the village to walk to the starting point. If you are driving from a distance away, please find a suitable and safe place to park that is considerate of neighbours. There are several car parks nearby in Boston Spa.
Please avoid parking on the pavements as these will be where we are walking and this is an accessible walk for pushchair and wheelchairs.
Where is the event start point?
The postcode for the starting point of the event is LS23 6AL – this is a field adjacent to 303 High Street, Boston Spa.

Spiritual and pastoral care
We place a high value on holistic care, which includes pastoral and spiritual care. We aim to support and respond to the spiritual needs of families, whatever their outlook or belief, whatever their faith or religion.
We work in partnership with local faith representatives so a range of prayers or rituals can be offered. (Sometimes these include christening in the Christian tradition or ceremonial washing in traditions such as Islam or Hinduism, either at the hospice or local place of worship.)
The Sanctuary
We have a welcoming space, situated among the trees in the garden where families can take a moment together.
