Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) has secured £1.4 million in funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to acquire a new, cutting-edge MRI scanner, designed to advance diagnostic research and bolster the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. This investment will enhance diagnostic precision and increase access to innovative research, benefiting smaller hospitals in rural and coastal regions that often lack such resources.

HDFT stands among only 36 NHS organisations in England chosen to receive this NIHR funding, a strategic move to foster research equity in less well-resourced areas. The Trust’s new MRI scanner will support a range of pioneering studies, particularly those focused on leveraging AI to diagnose complex health conditions more effectively.

Having already positioned itself as a leader in Imaging AI, HDFT’s implementation of AI-driven fracture detection software significantly improves diagnostic turnaround times. This technology allows clinicians to assess X-ray images within approximately 30 seconds, enabling swift fracture identification and prioritisation of critical cases. With the new MRI scanner, the Trust will explore similar AI advancements in MRI diagnostics, facilitating quicker, more precise insights for clinical teams.

When not engaged in research, the MRI scanner will be available for routine clinical use, increasing imaging capacity and reducing waiting times for HDFT patients.

Dr. Jacqueline Andrews, Medical Director at HDFT and Executive Lead for Research and Innovation, praised the award, stating:

“Congratulations to the clinical teams for securing this vital funding to bring a dedicated research MRI scanner to HDFT. As a Trust, we are deeply committed to expanding our research and innovation capabilities, ensuring our patients in Harrogate and surrounding areas have the same access to cutting-edge clinical trials and advanced technologies as those near larger teaching hospitals.”

Dr. Andrews further highlighted the Trust’s commitment to research, mentioning that HDFT has already invested in a dedicated Clinical Research Facility and established an Innovation Hub. These additions have significantly increased patient participation in research and innovation studies, delivering tangible community benefits.

This latest funding strengthens HDFT’s commitment to research-driven healthcare and reinforces its mission to improve patient care by integrating advanced diagnostic technologies and expanding research opportunities across the region.

Harrogate Hospital Award

News from the Harrogate Guide Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust Great National Award We are very happy to report that our HaPPi (Harrogate Post Procedure Patient Innovation) is a double awarding winning project! Last night, HaPPi was honoured to win the Supporting Elective Recovery through Digital category and highly commended in the Optimising Clinical Pathways through Digital category at the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Digital Awards. HaPPi is transforming day case surgery communication, helping patients to understand their expected recovery route through the use of personalised videos, recorded by the surgeon for their patients. The videos are securely delivered to our patients using our patient portal, Patients Know Best. These are the second awards the project has won, as it scooped the Health Tech News Awards for Innovation in Health Care and Overall Winner, earlier this year. “We are delighted to have won the HSJ Digital Award and to showcase this innovation implemented at HDFT and the positive impact HaPPI’s digital personalised videos pathway has had on communication and patient care. We are looking forwards to increasing this offering at HDFT and across the region, and embedding lasting cultural change in how we communicate with patients after day surgery,” said Mr David Duffy, innovator of HaPPi and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital. The Supporting Elective Recovery through Digital Award recognises teams who are developing and leveraging digital to reduce the elective backlog. This includes digital projects, solutions and services that are driving tangible improvements in patient waiting times, experience, and outcomes, and that display solid evidence of co-production with clinical colleagues. The judges felt that the HaPPi pathway fully met this criteria and we are delighted that the project has been recognised through this award. HaPPI is a simple, elegant and cost effective innovation that delivers better communication for patients and benefits for staff, and is already delivering on huge potential to scale up and adopt throughout the NHS and is simultaneously improving patient care and delivering significant cost savings. Congratulations to our winning team, we are so pleased to have you working at HDFT, transforming patient care. #HSJDigitalAwards #SupportingElectiveRecoveryThroughDigital # OptimisingClinicalPathwaysThroughDigi
