Good hair day – this classical bust greets from within the passageway outside Home & Garden in the lovely Montpellier Mews in Harrogate.

Simply named, and put together with thought, flair and elegance, Home & Garden in Montpellier Mews, Harrogate, is quite a find.
It’s a largish shop of about four rooms, stuffed most beautifully with beautiful things – interiors objets, decorative pieces, furniture, pictures and cushions, mirrors and glassware, boxes and cases and candles and tailors’ dummies and lighting and antiques and vintage items, and stuffed birds (quite lovely ones) and ceramics and plant pots and gift cards and lots, lots, lots more. And the prices are surprising – very reasonable, especially considering the unusual nature and the quality of the pieces. There are statues and busts for indoors and outdoors, and lighting and clocks and wooden hands and …

Actually, the decorative drama starts outside Home & Garden, in Montpellier Mews itself, which is a stunning little shopping and dining quarter in Lower Harrogate, home also to Susan Gaunt Boutique (independent designer clothes and homewares), the excellent Timberlake’s Bistro (British with a twist, house wine only £15 a bottle), and an antiques emporium and Jenny’s Tea Shop, and Elegant Era, a vintage-inspired clothes shop, among others – so well worth a visit if you’re in Harrogate.

Cool hat, although maybe she still looks just a tiny bit chilly …

Anyway, Home & Garden is the first shop you really notice, because of all the garden statues and ornaments outside it. And it is a great place to consider if you are looking for a garden ornament, as there’s an eclectic mix from classical to religious-style to more contemporary stone doggies and that sort of thing. So, there are the statues, and then you go through an arch and the garden decorative items continue with plant pots and wall plaques and more statues, as if spilling out of the shop and into the courtyard (again, so reasonably priced, like £7 for a small floral printed pot).

It’s unusual to see more manly tastes catered for in a homes and interiors shop. There’s an upmarket tailor-meets gentleman’s-club feel to this room at Home & Garden.

Open the door, step inside, and the plants pots continue, mixed in with garden ephemera and handy bits and pieces such as wire holders and wooden signs and trowels. It’s like an indoor/outdoor hallway to the other rooms of Home & Garden, a sort of magical passageway. Move inwards and each room is magical too, gasp-inducing as your eyes light upon something intriguing, wanting to take it all in while not missing a thing.

Home & Garden stocks many home candles, including these from The Harrogate Candle Company – www.harrogatecandlecompany.com – starting at around £10.

The rooms are decorated like a beautiful, opulently elegant home – and it’s all the work of owner Garry Faulkner, who has had Home & Garden for 18 years, after giving up his job as an electrician. He told me he started with £1,000 at a tiny shop in the corner of Montpellier Mews. Three months ago, he expanded into his largest room, which he has styled to look a little like a genteel gentleman’s club meets high class tailor, with 100-year-old French mannequins and a grand armoire, plus lots of home furnishings in here too, including cushions which he designs himself, taking antique prints and having them printed onto cushion covers. He can do them bespoke if wanted, so customers could take their own pictures in and choose their fabric. Also he can provide bespoke furniture from scratch too, like the upholstered armchair featured here, below.

Furniture can be custom-made from scratch – and check out the dog basket, plus there are lovely tweed dog collars for the stylish pooch around town.

Garry says he keeps expanding the range of services he offers in line with what customers seem to be looking for – and it appears to be working very well indeed. He’s got a great eye, both in terms of what he picks to stock and how he displays everything within the shop itself. It’s a gift.

The bespoke architectural cushion costs £70. Customers can bring in their own pictures to create bespoke cushions.

As you can tell, I love this shop. It’s so good to be able to browse and feel inspired in such a lovely environment. Home & Garden is shop that mixes antique and vintage with gorgeous new and contemporary pieces and, best of all, it doesn’t scare you with its prices. Yes, the bespoke architectural cushion is £70, but you pick up something beautiful for a few pounds, or for a few hundred, if you so wish. Home & Garden offers quality, individual and bespoke pieces at fair prices. As I said, it’s quite a find.
Home & Garden is at 2 Montpellier Mews, Harrogate HG1 2TQ. Tel: 01423 524650.
