Fishing

Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are often caught as wildlife from the natural environment, but may also be caught from stocked bodies of water such as pondscanalspark wetlands and reservoirsFishing techniques include hand-gatheringspearingnettinganglingshooting and trapping, as well as more destructive and often illegal techniques such as electrocutionblasting and poisoning.

The term fishing broadly includes catching aquatic animals other than fish, such as crustaceans (shrimp/lobsters/crabs), shellfishcephalopods (octopus/squid) and echinoderms (starfish/sea urchins). The term is not normally applied to harvesting fish raised in controlled cultivations (fish farming). Nor is it normally applied to hunting aquatic mammals, where terms like whaling and sealing are used instead.

Fishing has been an important part of human culture since hunter-gatherer times, and is one of the few food production activities that have persisted from prehistory into the modern age, surviving both the Neolithic Revolution and successive Industrial Revolutions. In addition to being caught to be eaten for food, fish are caught as recreational pastimesFishing tournaments are held, and caught fish are sometimes kept long-term as preserved or living trophies. When bioblitzes occur, fish are typically caught, identified, and then released.

Here at the Brown Trout we pride ourselves on our selection of trout and salmon reels.
Whereas most salmon reels have a modern disc braking system to facilitate playing larger species of fish- allowing the angler more control over his opponent, trout reels tend to be designed on a traditional click and pawl system, where the purpose is more to contain the line.
Reels tend to become part of what one’s pleasure is in fly fishing- they become old friends, and many a happy memory of epic struggles with fish are relived purely by taking one’s reel out of its bag at the begining of a new season in anticipation of things to come.
In both cases a reel is often considered to be what is loosely known as  “Gentlemens  Jewellery”
This is because many a reel is gifted to an angler from his/her partner to commemorate  some special occasion.
