We are a friendly Harrogate, crown green  club, with a well maintained green and facilities. Therefore is an ideal club for any new members, who are always welcome. We can offer trial periods, if you would like to try crown green  and the club for a few weeks with no obligation to join. Click Harrogate Club to find out what we are about!

A sport that anyone can play, crown green is a game where an eight year old could be playing an eighty year old. Because of this we are open to all members of the community and can offer coaching and tuition provided by accredited coaches. For more information see the events section for further details.

To promote the game of crown green we are looking to form links with local clubs and societies. Therefore we can offer tailored open days and coaching as required to meet your requirements,

Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity where players roll a ball toward a target, which can be pins in pin bowling or another specified mark in target bowling. Typically, when people refer to bowling, they are talking about pin , with ten-pin bowling being the most popular variant. However, in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, the term “bowling” can also encompass target bowling, such as lawn bowls.

In pin bowling, the objective is to knock down pins placed in a row at the end of a long playing surface called a lane. These lanes are constructed with either wood or synthetic materials and are treated with specific types of lubricating oil, applied in distinct patterns that influence the motion of the  ball. A “strike” occurs when all the pins are knocked down with the first roll, while a “spare” is achieved if all pins are knocked over in two rolls. Various forms of pin include ten-pin, candlepin, duckpin, nine-pin, and five-pin. The roots of modern pin bowling can be traced back to the historical game of skittles.

In target bowling, the objective is to place the ball as close as possible to a designated mark. The playing surfaces for target bowling can vary and may include grass, gravel, or synthetic materials. Games like lawn bowls, bocce, carpet bowls, pétanque, and boules come in both indoor and outdoor variations. Curling also shares similarities with the concept of bowling.

The origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt, with evidence of its existence dating to around 3200 BC. Wall drawings depicting bowling have been discovered in a royal Egyptian tomb from that era, and miniature pins and balls were found in a child’s grave around the same time.
