Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity where players roll a ball toward a target, which can be pins in pin bowling or another specified mark in target bowling. Typically, when people refer to bowling, they are talking about pin bowling, with ten-pin bowling being the most popular variant. However, in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, the term “bowling” can also encompass target bowling, such as lawn bowls.

In pin bowling, the objective is to knock down pins placed in a row at the end of a long playing surface called a lane. These lanes are constructed with either wood or synthetic materials and are treated with specific types of lubricating oil, applied in distinct patterns that influence the motion of the bowling ball. A “strike” occurs when all the pins are knocked down with the first roll, while a “spare” is achieved if all pins are knocked over in two rolls. Various forms of pin bowling include ten-pin, candlepin, duckpin, nine-pin, and five-pin. The roots of modern pin bowling can be traced back to the historical game of skittles.

In target bowling, the objective is to place the ball as close as possible to a designated mark. The playing surfaces for target bowling can vary and may include grass, gravel, or synthetic materials. Games like lawn bowls, bocce, carpet bowls, pétanque, and boules come in both indoor and outdoor variations. Curling also shares similarities with the concept of bowling.

The origins of bowling can be traced back to ancient Egypt, with evidence of its existence dating to around 3200 BC. Wall drawings depicting bowling have been discovered in a royal Egyptian tomb from that era, and miniature pins and balls were found in a child’s grave around the same time.
